If yet another summer has passed and you’ve not used your timeshare, you may well be asking yourself what the point of owning it is. If that’s the case, you’re not alone! Many families find that, over the years, the reality of owning a timeshare property is rather different than the dream they bought into.

“Difficulties in finding the right availability and steeply rising maintenance bills are two of the most common complaints that we hear from timeshare owners who have become less than enamoured with their holiday property ownership. Many families also find that changing circumstances mean that they no longer have the time or the money for the commitment of timeshare ownership.”

If time is ticking away without you using your timeshare property, it could be time to explore your options. Selling is one possibility, but it’s not the only way out. In fact, an increasing number of individuals are exiting their timeshares by finding holes in the original agreement they signed.

“Several court rulings over recent years have contributed to timeshare owners having an increased range of options when it comes to exiting their timeshare arrangements. If any money was handed over during the cooling off period, for example, the timeshare owner may well find that he/she is entitled to compensation and that the contract can be declared null and void.”

Likewise, if a contract is for a timeshare product that lasts longer than 50 years, there is a clear legal precedent for it being declared illegal and for the owner to claim compensation. The same is true of contracts for ‘floating weeks’ products.

“Owners’ hands are no longer tied in the way they used to be when it comes to exiting timeshare agreements. It’s well worth speaking to industry professionals to find out the options available if you’re struggling to find the time to use your timeshare, or if the commitment has become unaffordable. There are other ways out now!”
